Casual Recovery Ride with my Youngest
Today my eldest had a birthday party at the local roller rink, so while she was off with friends my youngest and I had some time kill. We also had a quick errand to run, so we decided to set up the casual cruiser/hybrid bike with the half bike and head down the Burke Gilman trail.

Riding is alot easier than Running… except for flats!
I did some active recovery today after yesterday’s long run. I cycled the same course that I ran… 11 miles out and back. It was a lot easier to ride at a leisurely pace of 16.5mph than it was to run that course at 9min/mile.
I wanted to ride the funny bike… but alas it had a flat tire when I pulled it out of the garage… maybe 3 miles was too much to ask of it after being in a garage forĀ 18 years. So then I figured well, ok, I’ll ride my fixie… as I was standing outside ready to go, chatting with my friend Dave (the actual owner of the funny bike) all of sudden “POP!”… my tire blew out on my fixie. WTF? Maybe I’m not supposed to ride today?
Good thing I have 4 bikes…
Pull out the road bike… ok… cool… let’s ride.

Out for a ride on a Funny Bike
Took a spin on this “Funny Bike” down to Speedy Reedy to ask them about a possible conversion…
Their toungs dropped on the floor when they saw this bike… They strongly advised against touching a thing on this bike. Instead they suggested:
- Add it to your collection as is, you’ll be the coolest kid on the block for sure.
- Or- Put it up on ebay and find the person even more into cool old bikes… they felt strongly that one “could get a lot of money for that bike… look at it man… mint condition… all original… sweet”
- They estimated $1500 to put the parts on it to make it tri bike ready… and for that I could get a new Cervelo. Well, that plus another couple hundred.
- They didn’t like the fixie idea, but I think that’s just because they knew it would be cooler than their fixies.
They gave me some BS about akward positions while doing track stands… blah…. these guys don’t know what they’re talking about.
Ok… off for my run.

Could this be my new Bike?
My buddy Dave brought over a little present for me today. His old time trial bike from the 80’s: A Shogun Kaze. This thing is old skool baby! Funny bike, 650 front wheel, 700 in the back. It’s about 16lbs all in right now… I am going to take it down to my local tri shop and get their opinion on what it would take to upgrade the components and set it up as a tri bike… if they laugh me out the door, then this thing may need to become my new fixie.
I absolutely love the lines on this thing. It is crazy sweet looking. I haven’t ridden it yet… but I’ll do that shortly and report back.
