Base 1.3 - Week 7 - The week that wasn’t

Ok, so I’ve hit my first real challenge of the 2012 training season. Basically, last week was a total blow out. I completely missed all my training goals, and squandered what should have been an important high volume training week.
The key to this challenge, will be making sure to not let it get me off track for the remainder of the year.
So, by way of review, and planning to prevent this in the future, I’m going to outline my crazy week and how I let it get away from me.
- Monday - Great day, on schedule. Strength for an hour, a great hour long swim, and a casual recovery run home.
- Tuesday - here’s where things started going down hill. The first issue was that things at the office were blowing up, and so, I got a call in early in the morning with a distress call that my help was needed, and would likely be needed all week. Secondly, I had an appointment for my DEXA scan, which (more on this later) revealed the very unexpected news that I have pre-osteoporosis. And finally, it was valentines day, and I had plans to make my daughters a special valentines day dinner, and then take my wife out for a valentines dinner. The upshot was, with the unexpected day in the office, I only had a quick 15 minutes to bang out an upper body strength session.
- Wednesday - Another unexpected full day in the office, but I did get a chance to sneak off to the YMCA at lunch for a swim. Unfortunately the pool closes at lunch and so I only got a little over 30 minutes in before they kicked me out. I was able to get a strength and flex session in that evening.
- Thursday - Another full day at the office. But I got a run commute home.
- Friday - Bike Commute, Strength Studio, and an abbreviated Swim. And another long day at the office. I forgot to do my stretching session that evening, otherwise this was a pretty full day.
- Saturday - MultiRider session, Stretching, and Strength. Not bad, but behind for the week.
- Sunday - CompuTrainer, Stretching, and Strength. Also not bad, but not my plan, since I had planned on doing a long run. If I’d gotten my butt in gear, I could have done that in the morning before the family woke up.
- Catch up mid-week - In retrospect, I had plenty of chances to “make up” for lost workouts. But I chose not to.
- Realistic Plan - My plan was a little out of sync and unrealistic. In my “annual plan” I had planned on doing a 100 mile long ride this week (on the CompuTrainer??? Really?). But when I made my “weekly details” I totally dropped that, and I had a long run and a 2.5 hour CompuTrainer ride scheduled for Sunday. But I should have known that wasn’t realistic with my family’s expectations. We try to always have a big family breakfast together on Sunday morning. The last couple weeks, I’ve been doing my long run early in the morning before anyone wakes up. I certainly could have done that, and then done a CT session later in the day… but that’s not as good as if I moved my long run to Saturday, and just did it after my MultiRider session.
