Lake Leland to Port Townsend and Back
Just recording the vitals of this ride… I need to come back to detail it. The headline is the goal of this ride was to stay in Zone 1 & Zone 2, even with a solid hill climb in the middle.
Pretty happy with the 18mph average especially considering the constraints (HR goals, and elevation gain.)
1 hour 40 mins in Zone… of the 30 minutes out of zone, Most of it was (26 mins) UNDER… and a little bit over (only 4 minutes)… but honestly, how do you stay in zone when you’re flying down a 19% grade hill… it’s not like you can keep pedaling to keep in your aerobic zone!?!
Pretty happy with my pace and my heart rate management, although honestly, I’m more frustrated that it’s hard to stay above the 130 HR in some cases… which is to say, I guess I need to push myself harder on the flats…. but not too hard.
- 20:26 - 7.1 miles - 138 avg for the flat from the lake house to the base of the climb.
- 45:20 - 12.5 miles - 137 avg for the climb and descent to Port Townsend.
- 41:08 - 12.5 miles - 136 avg for the climb and descent back from Port Townsend.
- 23:26 - 7.1 miles - 139 avg for the flat from the base of the climb back to the lake house.

I am still confused with the whole “zone” thing, mostly for lack of trying to understand it, or doing any research on what it is to train in the zones. Seems like something I should be doing, especially if I am thinking of getting into olympic and potentially 1/2 Ironman status with my Tri’s?! Any input….

What kind of gear you use to track HR? Curious, keep it up, ironman indeed. You motivate my own progress!

Lol..me too GK. I’ve asked Lisa but didn’t really understand her response either. It seems no matter what my distance my average HR is around 165. Is that good? Also..a 10:53 pace is good? I get mad when I end with anything above 9:30. Don’t know why..I just do.

I’ve been thinking about how to explain this Heart Rate Zone thing… because I agree, it can be confusing, and it’s not clear how it applies to most people. Does it only relate to elite athletes? Or can everyday athletes also benefit from understanding it.
Well… I think that understand your heart rate and how it effects your work effort (or how your work effort effects your HR) is useful to all athletes… but how to explain it?
I’m sort of thinking about an analogy with a tube of tooth paste… and thinking of the tooth paste inside as being your “fuel” or your “ability to keep running/cycling/swimming/etc”. And one way of thinking about it is to say… well… anyone can pick up a tube of tooth paste and squeeze some tooth paste onto their tooth brush and start cleaning their teeth. It doesn’t take any special skill or much thought.
But… depending on how you do it… you might waste some tooth paste… and more importantly, if you squeeze that tooth paste tube the wrong way, then when you get down to the bottom, you will find that it’s really hard to get that last bit of tooth paste out. But if you better understood how to get the most out of your tube of tooth paste, you can brush your teeth longer and get them more clean.
I’m not sure if it’s a great analogy… but it sort of speaks to the point that you don’t really need to be an expert in HR zones to finish your race… just like you don’t need to be an expert at squeezing tooth paste to brush your teeth. BUT… if you are smart about it, you will be able to go a lot longer…
So that’s the reason you should care… but explaining what to do with HR zones if you decide that you do want to pay attention to that sort of thing… well… that’s a whole other blog post.

Hey Brad, I have been trying to download a pic of my bike onto my blog. How do I do that. Also how do you do the stop watch counter to an event? Thanks Kevin
