Pilates Take 2

Today was my second pilates class. I thought it was the same class as my wife and I took two weeks ago, but somehow it was harder…. let’s consider the differences:

  1. I did ride my bike there… only 4 miles, but I was in a hurry, and riding my “commuter” which probably weighs about 45lbs and is uh… slow… And on top of that, the pilates studio is on top of a hill. I mean… at the top of a really big hill.
  2. I didn’t have any breakfast or coffee before my workout… I mean literally, I jumped out of bed, and jump on my bike to get there…. Since I am pretty much fueled on pure coffee… I was actually yawning on my bike ride…
  3. I got lost on the way there… called my wife on my cell phone a couple blocks from the studio… “Where is the pilates studio?” “Union.” “Oh… I’m on Madison…” “No problem you’ll make it.” “I’m on my bike!” And to make it worse I actually had gone down the hill a couple blocks… Union and 22nd was up the hill a couple more blocks… a couple blocks I had just come down! Ugh… pedal faster!
  4. Apparently, according to my wife, as confirmed later this evening in a phone call, we had attended the “All Welcome” class last time… and this mornings class was “Intermediate”… as far as I know there is no expert class, so this would be the most challenging class…

So, I admit, I struggled… mostly on the abs workout… The instructor, who remembered me, said “The choreagraphy will be difficult for you Brad, but try to keep up!”… Ugh… I tried. I could have sworn that these were the same routines as last time, but alas I couldn’t seem to keep my composure. Oh well, it was a good workout nonetheless.

Nice Coppenhagen Style Bike Commute to Pilates

I rode my bike to Pilates this morning… I am calling it a Coopenhagen style commute, because of a little note I read on the window of the bike shop NEXT TO the pilates studio. The owner of this bike shop is clearly a believer in bicycles as the ultra utilitarian functional device. He has a photo of a woman in Coppenhagen riding her bike to work, along with a well written explanation of why bicycling in Coppenhagen is so different from bicycling in the US (and possibly the rest of the world).

The basic idea of note was that unlike cycling in the US, the people of Coppenhagen don’t think of bicycles as particularly special, high tech, race-inspired, fast, light, or any of the things that the average bicycle shopper is confronted with in the US. In the photo, the woman is not wearing special clothes (or a helmet for that matter), because riding a bike doesn’t require special clothes or shouldn’t. She doesn’t have a bike “computer” or a heart rate monitor, or even a special backpack for carrying her things while she rides her bike… she’s got her purse over her shoulder.

The punch line of course is that if we stopped making such a big deal out of cycling being “special” that maybe more people would do it. It’s lovely sentiment… and it inspired me to pedal home without any sense that I should go faster or stay to the side so I don’t get run over… I decided to just ride, like I was merely “going somewhere”… not commuting… not being alternative… not making a statement. No, I was just going home after pilates class.

Short Back Session - Tummy Trouble

The plan tonight was that Tyler would come over early, we’d hit the weights, then we’d go for a run, and then head out and grab some dinner and hang out. My family is out of town and so I’m hanging out at home alone.  :(

The problem was I must have eaten something bad for lunch… as I got some serious cramps about half way through the strength session…. no way I’d make a run… and Tyler didn’t want to have anything to do with me for fear I’d get him sick.

Commute to/from lunch meeting

Rode to a lunch meeting with Phil and an old friend of ours from Revenue Science. The funny thing was that we originally planned to eat at one restaurant, but Phil said “No, I think that place is closed”… look it up online, yep, it’s closed… Ok, pick another place… I ride there… nope, they don’t open till 4pm… ok… third times a charm….. ahhh…. Lunch was good, nice to catch up with an old friend.

Pizza Delivery - Dean Karnazes Style

I once read an interview with Dean Karnazes (Ultra Marathoner… yeah he runs 100+ miles at a time)… where he claimed to get Pizza delivered to him in the middle of his long training runs…

I am a bachelor this week with my family out of town, so in addition to staying up late and working long hours, I am not eating dinner until 9pm at night… Tonight I realized I hadn’t eaten or exercised, so I called the local pizza place (about 2 miles from my house) about 8:30, ordered a Calzone, ran to go pick it up, ran home, ate it… yum.

I am sure I didn’t burn nearly the calories I consumed… but it was the more calories burned than if I had driven or let them deliver.

Me in 2002 - 200lbsThis is my fitness blog. Some people who knew me a long time ago may wonder, what the heck I'm doing writing a blog about fitness. Many of them wouldn't imagine that I'd have anything to do with fitness. You see, up until age 34, I treated my body very poorly. I sat around at home, at work, at play. I ate junk food and lots of it. And the result was what you'd expect 5'4" and 200 lbs with 36% body fat. (more...)
