Oh boy… Worse than I imagined!
I’ve been avoiding the scales for the last month or so… I knew they were going up. I knew I was breaking all the common sense rules of healthy living. I was exercising rarely, I was eating large portions, I was enjoying a drink or two with dinner, I was eating treats with the kids, I wasn’t sleeping well… these are all key ingredients to the recipe of weight gain. It was all capped off of course, by a decadent week in Puerto Vallarta. So, I’m home now, time to get serious… and that means first taking stock of the situation. Drum roll….
One hundred sixty point eight pounds! Ouch… that is a local maximum for sure. I have not weighed that much in the last four years. In fact 150 is my high water mark line in the sand… so to be ten pounds over that was a real shocker. Now granted, I took this weight last night before going to bed while wearing clothes. So it’s a little high, as my normal weight readings are done in the morning in the raw… but clothes and nightly water doesn’t explain ten pounds.
This morning the scales said 157.2lbs, which is equally alarming. My racing weight goal is 135lbs. So, uh… I’ve got work to do. No complaining… it’s just time to get serious and how! So here’s the plan for now… I will develop a more sophisticated plan in the next week or so.
- 1500 cals per day
- 100 cals each hour
- NO BIG MEALS
- Whole foods as much as possible.
- No more cheese.
- No more alcohol.
- Ride my bike every day!
So far this morning, I’m on track. I had my first meal at 7:30am, a banana, at 8:30 am, I had some chicken breast scrambled with egg whites. I will have some peanut butter here at 9:30am. I am about to jump on my bike for a nice 50 miler… I have 4 hours (which should give me 1 hour of padding) worth of food in pre-divided portions: some pecans, some dried cherries, some sliced apples, and a little hammer gel.
Hammer gel is the furthest away from real food, but in the sports nutrition department it’s the closest to real food I’ve been able to find. Certainly they work hard to make their product high-fructose corn-syrup free.
Now the work begins!

I’m with ya, brother!
At last Sunday’s marathon, the Mayo Clinic was doing a study on the effects of endurance events on the human body. Naturally I signed up.
Part of the deal was weight before and after. It was the first time I was on a scale in a few months and I tipped 92.0kg (202lbs). I hadn’t been above 200lbs in about a year.
So I took the first step this morning and have started logging my intake again. It worked quite well last year, helping me drop 25lbs in a few months.
Good luck, Brad!

Yep - count me in too. Too much going down my gullet, and not enough bike over the last couple of months has . . . well, let’s just say it ain’t pretty!

I thought it was just me. My metabolism seemed to just shut down mid January. I made it through the Holidays fine but then started climbing after that.

Hi , thanks 4 this post. It opens some new ways of looking to muscle building and fitness in general. it is just very sad when people are not open for learning new ways and tactics. problem is people are getting confused and even negative about weight lifting when those people start teaching others and preaching their “visions” . it is therefore important to have places like you have here . I wish you best results !
