Abs and Chest Workout

Tyler came over tonight for a strength training session. We started with Drizzit’s Killer Ab Workout. This was pretty challenging and definitely hits every little part of your abs. I could feel different exercises targeting different parts of my abdominal muscles. I added some decline oblique twists to the workout. Then hit 5 reps of pull ups and on to a chest workout.

Strength Training - Back workout w/ Tyler

Tyler and I are trying to get back into a regular strength training routine. He came over tonight and really wanted to do a “back” workout. I can definitely feel the fatigue in my back even as I type this post out.

I realize now that I didn’t actually pay attention to how much weight we did on some of these sets. So I’m guessing. Tyler is a big believer in the “different grips work different parts of your back” and so he loves to do essentially the same exercise with various bars and grips of different shapes and sizes. I don’t know the proper name for all these various weight machine attachments, so I’m just describing them as they look.

Workout:

  • 40 decline oblique twists to warm up
  • 10 decline situps
  • 5 pull ups
  • 4×8-12 @ 50lbs? Seated cable rows with a narrow/V-grip
  • 4×8-12 @ 50lbs? Seated cable rows with a wide “double D” grip
  • 4×12 @ 25lbs One arm dumbbell rows
  • 4×10 @ 50lbs? Wide grip Lat pull downs
  • 2×5 dips
  • 40 decline oblique twists
  • 10 decline sit ups

Workout:

  • Type: Strength Training
  • Date: 01/14/2008
  • Time: 21:30:00
  • Total Time: 1:00:00.00

4 Hills and 40 Miles on a Fixie in Seattle

It was a beautiful day today in Seattle, so I took my fixed gear Shogun Kaze Funny Bike out for a ride on the Burke Gilman trail. I love this bike, it rides real nice, and it gets lots of comments. It’s one thing to be riding a fixed gear bike, but the fact that this thing is brightly colored, with aggressive angles and more importantly a tiny front wheel.. I get a lot of comments.

I took it relatively easy for the first 12 miles staying on the flats, but then at Kenmore I turned up toward Jaunita Hill and south toward Kirkland. I did an out and back to down town Kirkland, which gave me a chance to do 4 hill climbs of about 450 feet each. I rode hard up all the hills making a point of pushing myself to the limit. This explains the 173 Max heart rate.

It was a great day for riding. The sky was clear, the temperature was just right. I was able to clear my head and think big thoughts. I need to ride my bike more often!

Food & Weight: 1/11/2008

Back story:

  • Yesterday I rode 4 hours in the rain, on my fixed gear bike, with no food or water. That was a crazy thing to do. I was cold, dehydrated, hungry, and exhausted.
  • I’ve also been working very hard on Sweat365 and so not much sleep in general the last couple months. I think it’s finally catching up to me.

Health:

  • Date: 01/11/2008
  • Weight: 144.5
  • Mood: Normal
  • Sleep Pattern: Normal
  • Calories: 2900

Food Eaten Today:

  • Breakfast: Egg whites, Havarti Cheese, Whole Wheat Bagel - 400 cals
  • Lunch: Dick’s Cheeseburger, Fries, “Delux”, Vanilla Shake - 1000 cals
  • Dinner: Calzone with Sausage, Pepperoni, Canadian Bacon, Black Olives, and Mushrooms - 1500 cals

Ok, I admit, I’m guessing here. I don’t think I’m under estimating… I am sure this was a lot of food. But I was hungry, and am still hungry…

First Loop of Lake Washington for 2008

I should write a more detailed report… but here are the headlines.

  • Road the Shogun Kaze Funny Bike Fixie build for 65 miles today… No kidding… that’s a long ride on this crazy bike.
  • It looked like it would be cloudy, with hints of rain… it turned out to be pouring rain… I got soaked!!!
  • The bike handled incredible well considering the conditions, but I took it slow for fear of taking a spill and losing all my teeth.
  • Really exciting moment #1… or Why I have brakes on my fixie… My CHAIN FELL OFF while descending a -9% grade hill. WOW! Can you imagine what that would have been like with no brakes.
  • Really exciting moment #2… or Why All Car Drivers Should be Forced to ride a bicycle for 3 months before getting their Drivers License… as I was riding along Lake Washington Blvd, a nice windy two lane road with a posted speed limit of 20mph! Some j@x@$$ in a truck decided to pass a car driving 5 mph OVER the speed limit. This guy in the truck was coming right at me, taking my entire lane… I was literally run off the road into the sidewalk! Holy Moly!
  • I love riding the Lake Washington Loop in the first week of the year! Even better if can be Jan 1.. but alas… it took me till the 10th! Plus… man, am I out of shape… this ride killed me… I haven’t ridden this far since Sept and my Ironman… but I love the bike… its time to ride more!

Me in 2002 - 200lbsThis is my fitness blog. Some people who knew me a long time ago may wonder, what the heck I'm doing writing a blog about fitness. Many of them wouldn't imagine that I'd have anything to do with fitness. You see, up until age 34, I treated my body very poorly. I sat around at home, at work, at play. I ate junk food and lots of it. And the result was what you'd expect 5'4" and 200 lbs with 36% body fat. (more...)
