New Year! Time to get back at it!
We all know the holidays can be a hard time to keep with your fitness and diet routines. There are all the parties, the food, the commitments which fill up your schedule. I am just as human as the next person, I too struggle with these issues. This year, I had the double whammy of a busy holiday season as well as a very busy schedule at work. We did, after all launch a whole new version of Konamoxt, now branded Sweat365.
A tight product schedule during a normally busy time of year, meant lots of long hours and late nights. And long hours and late nights make it really hard to do exercise. For the most part, I didn’t exercise at all during the holidays. Any time I wasn’t with my family at holiday events, I was busy preparing for our product launch.
So now the holidays are winding down, and we’ve come to the classic “are you in” moment. The first of the year. The day we buckle down and promise to ourselves to make changes. It’s a perfect day to start a new routine, right? Why is that? Are we as human beings so dependent and tied to our superstitions that we can’t start fresh on any day of the year?
I’ve got plenty of reasons to start fresh. My weight is up to 150lbs. This is what I consider my “line” in the sand. This was the weight I got down to in only 3 months when I first lost weight and got fit. It is not the weight I want to be… it is not the weight I’ve been at most of the last 3 years. My typical fighting weight is 140. And I’d prefer to be down around 135.
But what happens when you eat more and move less? We all know…
So today, I made a point of eating more appropriately. Breakfast was easy to stay away from the food, because honestly, I was still a little beat up from last night. Too much fun and craziness ringing in the new year. A little bit of eggs (good protein) and some toast. Not great but at least it wasn’t’ eggs and sausage and coffee cake and cinnamon rolls.
Lunch was leftover home made macaroni and cheese. Ok, clearly that was not the best choice. But I kept my portion size reasonable. And I made up for it at dinner. Dinner was salad with no dressing, some steamed broccoli, pineapple chunks with low fat plain yogurt. I’m going to estimate that I kept my calories to about 1800 for the day.
As for moving more… I’m didn’t get much in. No early morning run, no first day of the year bike ride. So, my choice is to say… it’s late! I missed it! The day is past. Or I could say… you know what, I just need to move a little bit more than if I hadn’t. That’s what progress is all about. So I’m going to go do some basic body weight stuff. I’m going to go do 100 sit ups, and 100 push ups.

I’m in for dropping a few pounds too. I know I keep saying this, but now with Boston on the line, I see benefit in dropping 5 pounds. It will definitely help me on the hills. I’ve given up red meat and I hate to say it, but I’m cutting out red wine too. I may have a little on the weekend, just so I don’t feel totally deprived.

We all have those times when we gain a bit and realize we need to keep working hard to keep the weight we once lost off for good. I am amazed that you are like my size! Anyway, I think you are in a good mindset. Just by having a line you’d not like to cross is a good way to keep yourself in check. I’d like to never go above 135lbs, and when I did I made sure to work towards going below it.
Over time, our lines change, but in the end our health and sanity are what matters. Enjoy the new year, give yourself a chance to get back into the groove. I’m sure I’ll be reading in a few months about how much you’ve already done in this year!
Keep up the good work!

I LOVE the new name, btw. As for weight, I hear you. I’m currently 15 lbs up from ideal. A question for you: how does a food and wine appreciator not grow to hate the “virtuous” choices? I want baguettes and sopressata and Camembert and port. I want a beer and a BLT. These things are sublime. I love my Kashi, too, but some days I want to feed to to the chickens. Then eat the chickens. Fried.
