Ironman Eve
Tomorrow will be my second Ironman race. I am finally starting to get a little nervous. Not as nervous as last year… but I can feel the anticipation rising. The big news of the day was that the course has completely changed! Yep… two years in a row, my efforts to have a pre-programmed course on my Garmin Edge have been thwarted.
This year, the race has been changed due to a massive 10,000+ acre wild fire that is burning out of control only about 20 miles from the race course. Although the fire is across a river from the course and so there is no risk of fire directly impacting the race, the smoke has been bad enough that the race director seriously considered cancelling the race. Grand Columbian Ironman – I have arrived.
Grand Columbian Ironman – I have arrived.
Today we arrived in Electric City and checked into the Coulee Playland Resort. This is the swim start for the Grand Columbian Ironman, and so we have a front row seat for all the festivities. Since I don’t mind camping… and I can sleep anywhere I actually think this is the best possible way to prepare for this race. I guess if we had an RV it would be even more comfortable, but honestly I don’t need that.
My Dad came along for support, and since he’s Mr. Camping we have a great (big) four man tent, comfy camp chairs, a gas stove, and we even have an awesome drip coffee maker that works on a camp stove. True luxury!

Las Vegas Here I Come!
I just signed up for the Las Vegas Half Marathon!
I just registered as part of the Sweat365 Team-training for the Las Vegas Half Marathon. I’ve run one half marathon before. My half marathon PR is 1:40:39.
My goals for this event are: I plan to run the full marathon, and I hope to qualify for Boston. Which means running the marathon in 3:15:59.99. I was planning on attempting this feat at the Tuscon Marathon, which is a notoriously easy course. The Vegas Marathon will be tougher… it’s flat, but I hear there is a tough headwind on the way back into town. But I couldn’t miss the chance to participate in this great event.
In addition to running half marathons, some of my other favorite activities include: triathlon, cycling, scuba, playing with my kids.
I can’t wait to meet some of the Sweat365 community in person.
Wish me luck… or better yet, join me in this adventure by signing up too.
See you there!

Cyclist Killed in Seattle
The sad news is that a cyclist was killed today in Seattle. Two cyclists were riding down a relatively busy street and were hit by a dump truck that turned right into/in front of them. One cyclist was killed and the other was pinned under the back wheels of the truck, although luckily was only injured with non-life threatening injuries.
For what it’s worth, the cyclist who died was not wearing a helmet… although I don’t think it would help much against the force of a dump truck hitting you. I had heard about the accident from my wife who called me at work right before I left to commute home by bike. She wanted to make sure I was ok, although she knew I wouldn’t have been anywhere near that part of the city.
I definitely don’t want to sound like I’m blaming the victim here, because I have very little information about the facts of the case, but when I heard that the cyclist who died was not wearing a helmet I couldn’t help but speculate that he may also have been engaged in other reckless behavior that may have contributed to the accident.
Edit: A reader points out that the bike did have a front break. And if you look closely at the start of this video you can see the brake.
I found this news report, which includes video and a photo of the scene. I hate to say it, but it looks like that’s a brakeless fixed gear bike. I can’t confirm this… (Edit: A reader points out that the bike did have a brake, you can see it in the video.) but if so then I am truly saddened and disappointed. Of course I would be sad about any cyclist being killed in such a tragic way. But if this was a cyclist who was riding without brakes down a hill on a busy street in rush hour traffic… then well… it’s just the sort of thing that gives cyclists and fixed gears a bad name.
It sounds like from witness accounts that the cyclists were speeding down the hill and attempted to pass the dump truck on the right, when the dump truck turned right at the intersection. The cyclist made a panic turn, but was not able to avoid the truck. I suspect that the truck never even saw the cyclist.
Ugh! This sort of thing really bothers me. Such a sad and tragic event for everyone involved.

Commute Home from Office
In the ride home from work I felt under pressure to get home in time for going out to dinner with the family. We were celebrating the first week of school by going to our favorite “pond of cheese” Mexican restaurant.
On my ride my quads were a little sore… I didn’t stretch them out enough before and after my morning commute, and before my evening commute. Need to remember to stretch better!!! Make time to stretch.
I rode hard for the first 23 miles or so (19.5mph average), but the last 2.5 miles the trail gets pretty busy with other cyclists and runners, so I had to slow down. I ended up chatting with some other cyclist those last couple miles. We were chatting about road safety etc.

My Brother is Crazy - Genius Crazy
While we were on our family-reunion last month at Lake Leland, my brother decided we should make a movie. This is what we came up with. Considering that we took all these random shots throughout the week and Greg did all the editing work on his own, I think he did an amazing job. You can read his blog post about the process here.
Be forewarned, this is cheesy slapstick bad acting and all.

Call me a flexibility cheater! I dare you!
I’ll right… I admit. Adding 90 minutes to my workout log because I went to get a massage today is kinda sleazy. But hey… it hurt like hell! I mean my massage therapist was really working hard on those muscles.
To help with the shoulder pain she started on my pecs… including some crazy preasure point stuff where when she was twisting my arm and pressing her finger tips into the muscles under my arm apparently my pecs were spasming. It was enough for her to say “Wow that’s freaky I’ve never seen that! The human body is amazing!”
Amazing to her… but it hurt like hell to me. Of course I was born of Norther European stock… so I have to say “oh that’s do-uh-uh-snnnn’t huuuuurt….. honnnnnnest…”
She also worked my legs… focusing on my IT band and hamstrings. She did some myofascial massage on my IT band. Lisa wrote a great article about using rollers in order to facilitate self-myofascial release. But my massage therapist was able to really get in there on a narrow detailed level to help break up the adhesions in the fascia layer of the skin. This is something that you really can’t do completely by yourself… at least not on your IT band.
One more PT appointment and one more Massage before race day… I kinda feel like I’m cramming for a test at the last minute… and I would have been better served by getting these treatments spread out over the course of the last year. So next year I will have no excuse if I let it get to this point again.
