My New MacGyver Garmin Battery Pack

I finished up my MacGyver’ed extended Battery Pack for my Garmin Edge/Forerunner for my double century (Seattle To Portland) ride this weekend.

I followed the directions from a great blog post, and got my extended battery pack working great.  Ironically, the website where I got the directions has now disappeared (it appears as if there was some problem with the hosting provider) well, anyway, maybe I’ll get time to take some photos and document the process myself, so that this information will live on in the general creative commons.

My test ride was a mellow 12.5 mile ride in about 48 minutes. I was taking it really easy as a pseudo taper for this weekend.

My New MacGyver Garmin Battery Pack

Brad,

Can you use the Garmin and charge it at the same time or does the power have to be off?

Also, I noticed your countdown for the Tucson Marathon. My father will be running it and asked me to come along, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make the trip. Good luck down there, I hear it’s a fast course. Any specific goals for the race?

Yes! You can use the Garmin and have it “plugged in and charging”… it’s pretty cool actually, the Garmin thinks it’s plugged in to power and so it’s just charging away.

Last year, my edge made it 7.5 hours, I’ve never used my Forerunner for more than 5 hours straight… so I’m not sure how long the internal battery will last, but I know it won’t make it all the way. I also have no idea how long the 9V battery will last, so my plan is to take 2 9V and to use the Garmin without a battery for the first 6 hours or so.

As for Tuscon, I am not registered yet… but since I’ve heard it’s a fast course, and since it’s right around when I was planning on attempting to qualify for Boston (and I’m going to need all the help I can get) I figured it may be a good choice for attempting to qualify for Boston.

I need to run a 3:15:59 marathon to qualify though… which was going to be tough without all the injuries I’ve had… so I know it’s a long shot.

I’m hoping to qualify for Boston as well, but I need to be 5 mins faster. I’m planning on Seattle, but I don’t think I’ll be able to do it in 3:10, so I’m targeting something in spring/summer 2008 to run my qualifier. I’d like to do Seattle in 3:20 - 3:30.

We should try to do a couple long runs together, our training schedules will likely be fairly compatible.

Hey Zappo - thanks for the comment on my blog… nice to see you around again! Like the new blogging system (this is my first look).

Thanks for the note Gary. Yes, I think we were really inspired by some of your comments about workout logs and blogs in how we envisioned Sweat365 coming together. We don’t have all the workout log features of some of the packages out there, but we’re working on it.

Scott,

Yes. I’d love to do some long runs with you! Let’s work out a time.

clukasik Training Blog · Short run with new Garmin says:

[...] My old Garmin Forerunner 201 has decided it no longer wants to track my heart rate….silly device…doesn’t it know it’s nearly bonus season at work? Headed down to REI the other day to pick up a new Garmin Forerunner 305….sweet! They’ve made a few changes I’m not wild including the slightly smaller screen and slightly shorter battery life than my old device: 15 hours supposedly for the 201 vs 10 hours for the 305 (but if I study Brad’s battery extension project perhaps I, too, can pump mine up!) but WORST of all the device no longer connects directly to my computer…I’m forced to use their little ‘docking toggle’ thing. That’s going to take a bite out of my reporting as I generally just plug in my device right after a workout (when I get to the office) to upload data and charge - all done with whatever USB cable I happen to have had on my desk (since most of my other mobiles use the same connector). Now I’ll either have to tote the docking station around with me or buy an additional one as I can’t be bothered to remember if it’s at home or the office and where/when I last charged it or uploaded data. It’s gotta be dead simple and ALWAYS the same for me or I get all befuddled. I’m sure I’ll figure out a new system. [...]

Brad- do you have any pix of your battery extension you can post? So curious to see how it looks/works!

Me in 2002 - 200lbsThis is my fitness blog. Some people who knew me a long time ago may wonder, what the heck I'm doing writing a blog about fitness. Many of them wouldn't imagine that I'd have anything to do with fitness. You see, up until age 34, I treated my body very poorly. I sat around at home, at work, at play. I ate junk food and lots of it. And the result was what you'd expect 5'4" and 200 lbs with 36% body fat. (more...)
