Another Fixed Brick - Run
Posted by Brad Hefta-Gaub under: Run; alley cat race; fixed gear; fixie; public art.
After my 32 miler I did a quick 3.5 mile run. I figured that’s about how farI got before my knee started hurting on my last run, so hopefully I could make it without pain.
Plus, I made a point of trying to run slower. Although I’m not sure I succeeded… I mean it wasn’t super slow. But it seems it was slow enough.
There was some kind of a fixed gear convention happening about half a mile from my house on the Burke Gilman trail. There’s this spot under the University Bridge where there is some public artwork that is a huge metal sheet that says “Wall of Death” above the trail. The trail is below the roadway about 30 feet and theres a sloped concrete retaining wall that skateboarders and bmx/trick bikers are often doing tricks off of.
As I ran past there were about 30 bike messenger types with their brakeless fixed gears hanging out. One guy who I recognized from Recycled Cycles was entertaining the crowd riding his bike up the wall and doing spinning backward skids back down the wall. Impressive stuff on a track bike.
It was unclear to me what the gathering was about, it seemed a little too early for an Alley Cat race, and it wasn’t the last Friday of the month, so it wasn’t a Critical Mass gathering. I didn’t dare ask, as I was wearing my tri-shorts and technical running shirt, I was clearly not part of their click.
