My Friends Often Call Me Crazy…
…but I know I’m not the most crazy endurance athlete out there.
I rode in to work this morning… it turns out it was icy on the roads near my office… how could I have know that near my house 30 miles away? After crashing my bike twice I finally gave up and called a buddy from work to pick me up. He happily agreed, but apparently he was heard in the halls of the office on the way out saying “Brad is CRAZY!”
My sister read my post (from the road after the second crash), and she too hypothesized that I may be crazy… “You really sound so driven sometimes I think you are insane!”
I’ve done a lot of crazy things this year in endurance sports…. but am I as crazy as some of these other athletes? You be the judge…

T -5 Days
I have 5 days left in the year, unfortunately I couldn’t ride my bike today. But after getting a couple votes from you guys that Spin class miles count, I decided to count them from 20mph. That means I still need 157 miles to reach my 5,000 mile goal.
No cycling today, but I had a pretty big day otherwise, which gives a second reason for the name of this post. I quit my job about a month ago, and my last official day is 12/31. Yep, come Monday I am a free man… I will take some time off, reconnect with the family, spend some extra hours riding and running out on the open road. So today, I was at the office for the third to last day, packing up… I would have ridden in, but I couldn’t really bring home boxes of books on my bike.
So here’s the plan… tomorrow and Friday I will ride my bike the long way to and from work. This will add another 100 miles, leaving me only 57 miles for the weekend. This will be no problem. If I head out for 50 miles on Saturday morning… I can even finish my year with a leisurely 7 mile ride with the family in tow.
That’s the plan… and I’m sticking to it.

Pouring it on!
I will admit it. I am a little bit competitive. The funny thing is, I am probably more competitive with myself than I am with other people. Don’t get me wrong, I love a duel! I love to take someone or some people on in a challenge…. but I also push myself… to compete against… me.
So you shouldn’t be surprised to hear that this 5,000 mile thing has been eating at me. I figure I have six days left in 2006. So I am going to make the most of it. I rode 50miles on Christmas Eve morning. My family sent me off with a couple free hours as an early Christmas present. Today, I rode in the longerish way to work: 30 miles. Oh, did I mention it is pouring rain here in Seattle today. In fact the forecast calls for rain showers for most of the rest of the year.
With my 30 soaking wet mikes this morning, I am 80 miles away from 4,000 road miles. So of course, I have to go for it. I have to cross at least 4,000 miles. Now, if I give myself credit for 20 miles for every hour of spin class, then I’d be at 4,818 miles counting these spin class credits… and cycling another 182 miles in the next 6 days it totally doable… right!
So, what do you all think? Is it cheating to count those spin class miles? I mean, my legs were moving! Heck, considering how much effort I give in those classes, it’s definitely more of a workout then 1 hour on the road. Can I count them? What do you say?

More 2007 Planning: Bette Hall Got Me Thinking…
I got a post from Bette Hall today about planning the 2007 season. After taking some time away from work the last couple days, I’ve had a chance to stew some more on my goals for next year. I think I’m still set on all of the high level goals I described in my earlier post, but I’ve done some more thinking about races…. there are a couple of races (rides and runs) I really enjoyed last year and I think I want to repeat them.
I still need to figure out which marathon (or marathons) I should shoot for on my quest to qualify for the 2008 Boston Marathon. I’ve heard the Philly is good because it is a forgiving (read flatter than normal) course. I really need to do some more research into this. So I still have some more work to do, but in the mean time here is the list of races I really want to do again.

5,000 Miles? Not this year.
Well, I have to admit I am a little bummed out. I will not make 5,000 road miles on my bike this year. I thought I was well on my way (actually I thought I was past it)… but due to having lots of different gadgets tracking my miles this year (Polar s720i
, Garmin Edge 305
, Garmin Forerunner 305
, gmaps, etc.) I didn’t have a single place to see my total progress. Last night I decided to double check my results, and I was shocked to discover that I had only completed 3,839 road miles this year! Not even if I go crazy and ride 100 miles a day for the rest of the year could I pass the 5,000 milestone.

Keeping Fit During the Holidays
‘Tis the Season… for people like us trying to stay fit, eat healthy, and exercise to get a lot of grief from pretty much anybody and everybody else we meet. Yes, I’m sad to say it, but that’s been my experience.
This is my third holiday season since “losing a lot of weight”. Three Thanksgivings and three Christmases and soon to be three New Years later, I feel like I can call myself a survivor. But it hasn’t been easy…
I guess my first year was probably the most risky. I had lost 50lbs in 3 months. I felt great about my accomplishments. And I had gotten it into my mind that I wanted to go out an use my new body to do things I hadn’t tried to do before. I had been going to the gym 5-7 days a week. I had been eating very few calories. And although I kept up this routine right through New Years day, I had my eyes set on the new year being the year that I “didn’t have to lose any more weight”. Read the rest of this entry »
