Me in 2002 - 200lbsUntil I was age 34, I treated my body very poorly. I sat around at home, at work, at play. I ate junk food and lots of it. And the result was what you’d expect 5′4″ and 200 lbs with 36% body fat.Then I decided to get healthy. I lost 50 lbs in 3 months. How? By working out 5 days a week 45-90min a day; and eating only 1200-1500 calories a day. Yes, it was extreme… and probably destined to start me on a yo-yo of weight gain and loss. But in the last three years I’ve kept it off.The last two years I’ve really gotten into cycling and triathlon. I have averaged over 5000 miles per year on my bike in the last couple years. This past summer I completed my first Ironman Triathlon. I came in 13th place overall, 4th in my age group.

My typical weight is now around 145lbs. And I’ve had my body fat tested at around 19%. This past summer I got down to around 135lbs, and I’d like to be at that weight with more core muscle strength. As you might imagine, with 5000 miles of riding, my legs are solid muscle. But the rest of my body is pretty much jello. I’ve tried strength training, but I just never seem to get inspired.

Seattle To Portland Finish 2006My big goal for this year is to do the same Ironman, but 90mins faster. This will require running a 3:30 or less marathon, and cutting 30 mins off elsewhere in the race. Wish me Luck!
